The term HMS derives from the German word 'Halbmastwurfsicherung' which is the belaying technique we know as an Italian or Munter hitch. The pronounced 'pear-shape' of HMS karabiners allows for easy manipulation of the ropes in an Italian hitch or when using a belay device.
